Biography:
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Donovan won his “Wild Bill” nickname while playing for Hartford in the minors. When Hartford teammate Cy Seymourwas returned to the Major Leagues after throwing wildly over a fence behind home plate, Donovan walked nine consecutive batters. Donovan received a $10 fine and a new nickname. Donovan served as the head football coach at Georgetown University in 1898, leading the Hoyas to a record of 7–3.
A hard-throwing and durable right hander, “Wild Bill” Donovan harnessed his lively curveball, volatile temper and busy social life well enough to become a 25-game winner first in the National League and later in the American. Genial and engaging, Donovan was called “Smiling Bill” by sportswriters and was a fan favorite, though umpires frequently found cause to eject him. Regarded as a “slant ball artist” and a “big game pitcher,”
